Narex Chisels are made in the small village of Bystřice in the Czech Republic where they have been making tools for over 100 years. The Narex factory was founded in 1919 by Václav Richter, and while the factory has modernized over the past century, many of the manufacturing methods such as drop-forging are still in use. They have become well known for making high quality, reasonably priced tools, including chisels.
These versions of the Richter Bench Chisels use the same steel as the regular Richter Chisels but are socket chisels which have a tapered connection between the steel blade and the handle - some users prefer socket chisels because they can be hit harder than tang style chisels without the handle splitting and it is also easier to make custom handles for them.
The harder the socket chisels are struck the further the taper of the chisel handle is driven into the matching taper in the blade, however when new or with humidity changes the handles can sometimes become loose (just ask Lie Nielsen or Stanley chisel users) - this can be fixed by striking the handle with the blade taper pointing into softwood or plywood, but some users prefer to secure the handle taper in the blade using hair spray or rubber cement.
Most of the available sizes overlap with the standard tang style Richter Bench Chisels however there is one unique 5/8" size which is only currently available as a Richter Socket Style Chisel.
