Petrograd Toolworks have been hand crafting tools in their St Petersburg Russia workshop since 2008. They design and manufacture a rapidly expanding product line of premium quality axes, adzes, gouges, drawknives and other woodworking and carpentry tools.
Their tools are made using high quality materials and are designed and manufactured to a very high standard. Their designs tend to combine the best features of Russian, Scandinavia, Western European and American historical toolmaking traditions.
The edge tools they make are typically hand forged from high carbon steel, carefully heat treated, and supplied fully sharpened. The larger edge tools such as adzes, axes and drawknifes are supplied with very well made leather edge protectors.
Stryi was the first Ukrainian manufacturer of carving tools and have been in business for 10+ years. Their tools are made in a small shop in the town of Stryi by a small team of craftsman. Most of the tools are made from W1-7 carbon steel, hardened to 58 to 62 Rc.
The handles are all nicely shaped from oak and finished with linseed oil. Most of the tools are made from 2 mm thick material and they roll the sheet into a tang rather than forging it - this keeps their costs down. These tools hold their edges very well and are shipped sharp and ready to carve.
